Despite the countless hangover cures on the market, there is no scientifically proven way to prevent or cure a hangover completely. Research suggests the best approach is to eat before drinking, stay hydrated, pace your alcohol intake and avoid excessive drinking, while recognizing that factors like genetics, sleep and overall health also influence how you'll feel the next day.
Whether it’s celebrating a wedding, catching up with friends on a patio, or enjoying a few drinks at the cottage, alcohol is part of many social occasions. While drinking less is the most effective way to reduce your risk of a hangover, that's not always the advice people are looking for after planning a night out. Instead, they're searching for ways to wake up feeling a little more human.
Unfortunately, the internet has no shortage of questionable advice. Greasy breakfasts, pickle juice, activated charcoal, vitamin cocktails and brightly packaged "hangover cures" promise to stop next-day misery before it starts. The problem is that very few of these claims hold up under scientific scrutiny.
Researchers have spent decades studying why hangovers happen and whether they can be prevented. While they haven't discovered a miracle cure, they have identified several factors that contribute to hangovers and a handful of strategies that appear to reduce their severity. The science may not be as exciting as the marketing, but it's considerably more reliable.
One of the biggest misconceptions about hangovers is that they're simply caused by dehydration. Alcohol does increase urine production by suppressing vasopressin, a hormone that helps the body retain water, which is why thirst and dry mouth are among the most common symptoms after drinking.
But dehydration is only one piece of the puzzle.
As alcohol is metabolized, the liver converts it into acetaldehyde, a toxic intermediate compound before breaking it down further into acetate. At the same time, alcohol irritates the stomach lining, disrupts normal sleep, affects blood sugar regulation and places stress on multiple organ systems.
Perhaps most importantly, researchers now believe inflammation plays a central role in the hangover experience. Studies have shown that alcohol consumption can trigger the release of inflammatory molecules known as cytokines, which are associated with fatigue, headaches, muscle aches, poor concentration and the general feeling of being unwell that often lingers the next day.
Researchers have also found that no two people experience alcohol exactly the same way. Genetics, age, biological sex, body size, medications, sleep quality and overall health all influence how alcohol is metabolized. Two people can consume the same drinks over the same amount of time and wake up with dramatically different symptoms the following morning. Understanding that hangovers involve multiple biological processes also explains why there has never been a single treatment capable of preventing them altogether.
While no strategy guarantees you'll avoid a hangover, several habits consistently appear in scientific research because they help reduce some of alcohol's effects on the body.
Eating before drinking is one of the simplest and most effective. Food slows the movement of alcohol from the stomach into the small intestine, where it is absorbed much more quickly into the bloodstream. Meals containing protein, healthy fats and fibre appear particularly helpful because they remain in the stomach longer, resulting in a slower rise in blood alcohol concentration.
Hydration is also important, although it's often overstated. Drinking water throughout the evening and before bed won't prevent inflammation or restore disrupted sleep, but it can lessen dehydration-related symptoms such as thirst, dizziness and dry mouth. Alternating alcoholic drinks with water is a simple habit that may make the next morning a little more comfortable.
The type of alcohol you choose may also influence how you feel. Darker spirits such as bourbon, brandy and dark rum contain higher concentrations of naturally occurring compounds called congeners, which are produced during fermentation and aging. Controlled studies suggest beverages higher in congeners are associated with more severe hangovers than drinks containing fewer congeners, such as vodka. While switching to clear spirits isn't a guarantee you'll avoid a hangover, it may reduce symptom severity for some people.
Perhaps the strongest predictor of a hangover is simply the amount of alcohol consumed. Your liver can only metabolize alcohol at a limited rate, and that rate varies from person to person. Drinking heavily or consuming alcohol quickly gives your body less opportunity to process it efficiently, increasing the likelihood of more severe next-day symptoms.
In other words, the most effective prevention strategies aren't particularly glamorous. Eating beforehand, staying hydrated, pacing your drinks and knowing your personal limits remain the recommendations most consistently supported by research.
Walk into almost any convenience store, gas station or pharmacy today and you'll likely find some sort of hangover prevention, or “cure,” right there at the counter. Pills, gummies, powdered drink mixes and herbal shots promise to "detox," support your liver or stop hangovers before they start.
Despite the confident marketing, the evidence behind most of these products is surprisingly limited.
Many commercial hangover remedies contain ingredients such as electrolytes, B vitamins, vitamin C, milk thistle, prickly pear extract, N-acetylcysteine (NAC), dihydromyricetin (DHM) or proprietary herbal blends. While a few of these ingredients have shown encouraging results in small or preliminary studies, systematic reviews consistently conclude there is not enough high-quality evidence to recommend any commercial product as a reliable hangover prevention or treatment.
That doesn't necessarily mean every product is ineffective. Electrolytes can help replace fluids and minerals lost through increased urination, and some plant compounds are being actively studied for their potential anti-inflammatory effects. However, none have consistently demonstrated an ability to prevent or eliminate hangovers in well-designed human clinical trials.
Many long-standing home remedies don't fare much better. Coffee may make you feel more awake, but it doesn't speed up alcohol metabolism. Greasy breakfasts can't absorb alcohol that's already been digested. Activated charcoal has little effect because alcohol is absorbed into the bloodstream rapidly after drinking. Even intravenous hydration clinics, which have become increasingly popular in recent years, have limited evidence supporting their routine use in otherwise healthy adults recovering from a night of drinking.
For now, the research offers a refreshingly straightforward message. There is no miracle pill, drink or supplement that can erase a hangover. If you choose to drink, your best bet is to support your body before and during the occasion rather than relying on a product the next morning.
Science hasn't discovered a cure for hangovers, but it has shown that simple habits are far more effective than flashy promises.
